KUCHING: A man who was angry at being fined for driving without a licence here took his “revenge” against the police by posting defamatory Facebook remarks against the force, along with a fabricated story about a major event being banned.
The incident was triggered when the 35-year-old contract worker with a local authority was stopped at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petrajaya here yesterday and was slapped with a traffic summons for driving without a licence.
It is believed he was at the stadium to attend a major automotive show there.
Deeply disgruntled by the police’s action, the man allegedly uploaded fake news onto his Facebook page, warning others that the automotive show’s organiser had no permit to hold the event, and that police were setting up roadblocks to prevent the public from entering the stadium.
The man also used harsh, derogatory words against the police in his post.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the social media post came to the attention of the police, who subsequently arrested the man at about 1am today.
Police also seized the man’s mobile phone to facilitate investigation into the case under Section 5000 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“Initial investigation revealed that the suspect was (furious over) the summons and posted the defamatory and derogatory posting,” said Dev, adding that the man has been remanded until Thursday.
Dev added that a total of 20 people have been arrested for various online offences in the state this year.
