KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, through his lawyers today, filed a discovery application for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and senior lawyer Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah to disclose their financial statements.
This is in relation to the alleged RM9.5 million paid to Shafee to carry out prosecution against him in the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court in his sodomy appeal.
The document was filed at the High Court registry here as a follow-up to his recent application for his immediate release.
In the application, the former opposition leader is seeking for the bank statements of the two claiming that a sum of RM9.5 million was paid by the prime minister to Shafee in two tranches in which the first payment of RM4.3 million was made on Sept 11, 2013, whereas the second one, a total of RM5.2 million was made on Feb 17, 2014.
Anwars claims that the payments were within the sole knowledge of Najib and Shafee.
He also claims that the payment made were concealed from the courts and plaintiff (Anwar) and render that Shafee was not an independant prosecutor.
A week ago, Anwar had filed an originating summons against the government calling for his immediate release on grounds that he was denied a fair trial.
He is seeking to set aside and quash the judgment of the Court of Appeal in March 2104 and also to set aside the affirmation of the Federal Court following an allegation that Shafee who was the lead prosecutor in his sodomy appeal, was paid a sum of RM9.5 million.
In the document, Anwar claims that Shafee did not discharge his duty fairly as a prosecutor and that he had a direct financial interest in the matter.
Anwar alleged that Shafee had been paid an enormous amount by a person interested in the outcome of the case, namely Najib.
