16 people nabbed in crackdown on illegal gambling

MIRI: total of 16 people, aged between 20 and 50 were nabbed in two raids by police in a crack down against illegal gambling.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Chief Datuk Dev Kumar said a police team raided the first floor of a shoplot at Jalan Desa Indah, Bandar Baru Permyjaya here about 6pm.

Two caretakers, both foreigners and another eight gamblers were arrested.

Both the foreigners did not possess any valid travel documents.

"We seized ten laptops used for cyber gambling and WiFi peripherals and cash amounting to RM618," he said in a statement here today.

Another raid was carried out about 7pm at Jalan Pasar Lutong where a group of people were found engaged in online gambling.

Two local woman and four men were nabbed while ten laptops, nine desktop computers, WiFi peripherals and cash amounting to RM370 were also seized.

All the suspects will be produced in court for remand this morning.

The cases are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and the Immigration Act.

"I appreciate the commitment of our men in combating the illegal activities.

However, the battle is far from over as there are still stubborn operators continue to take risks and operate without any regard for the law," he said.

Dev said the police will continue to intensify efforts to wipe out illegal gambling in Sarawak.
