KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy has confirmed that two of its sailors died while in the detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan in Perak yesterday.
In a statement today, RMN said the deceased were identified as Mohd Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Sukri, 26, both Laskar Kelas 1 (Able Rate).
“The two had complained of exhaustion after undergoing physical training according to the standard operating procedures (SOP).
“They were immediately told to rest and then were returned to the detention unit.”
The statement said the personnel appeared to be exhausted and were vomiting and having breathing difficulties.
RMN said they were then given treatment by staff at the unit but both personnel were pronounced dead by paramedic officers at 3.15pm.
“Checks by doctors on their bodies show that there were no signs of physical abuse or beatings.”
RMN said it had set up an inquiry board to scrutinise the existing SOP and find out if there was any breach of it during the training.
RMN said the cause of death was under police investigation and that RMN would give its full co-operation to assist in the probe.
RMN said it would not compromise or protect any individuals if there was a breach of procedures which led to the deaths.
