Police bust businessman running drug syndicate, seize RM488,600 syabu

GEORGE TOWN: A businessman has been living a luxurious life for the past four months funded by his drug smuggling activities.

The man’s secret however, was revealed when police raided a condominium in Pulau Tikus on Tuesday.

In the 6.50pm raid, police seized 6.98kg of syabu, worth RM488,600, following a tip-off.

State police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the drugs were found hidden inside a Chinese tea packaging, before it would be smuggled to a neighbouring country.

He said the 43-year-old businessman had rented the condominium which he used as a storage unit to hold the drugs before they are moved overseas.

“Initial investigation showed that the suspect will smuggle the drug overseas where he has a ready network. He also has an individual who will help him deliver the drugs.

“Our investigation also showed that he is the mastermind behind the drug trafficking activity,” he said.

Chuah said police also seized jewelleries, cash, a Rolex watch, three motorcycles and a car, all of which are worth RM294,989.

“The suspect has been remanded for seven days to assist in investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters Thursday afternoon.
