2 fined RM7,500 for stealing Penang Sleeping Buddha statue

GEORGE TOWN: The duo arrested for stealing a Sleeping Buddha statue two weeks ago were fined RM7,500 or a year's jail by the magistrate's court today.

Lim Su Quinn, 29, and Lim Keng Liang, 37, pleaded guilty to stealing the statue at Penang Buddhist Association prayer hall at Jalan Anson at 8.30am on Dec 11.

Deputy public prosecutor Atiqah Abdul Karim prosecuted while counsel Jefferey Ooi Ping Hong and R Puran represented the accused respectively.

Both counsel urged magistrate Qasiratul Jannah Usmani Othman to impose a lenient sentence considering that the accused had saved costs and the court's time by pleading guilty.

Atiqah however requested for a reasonable sentence considering the accused had stolen the statue at a place of worship.
