PONTIAN: The Sessions Court here sentenced a Bangladeshi construction worker to six years and eight months’ jail on 16 charges of possessing passports, forging a visa and misusing a visitor’s pass.
Md Mohiuddin Mamun, 40, was also fined RM30,000 and ordered to receive two strokes of the rotan.
He pleaded guilty before Judge Zahilah Md Yusof.
He was charged with:
* 14 counts of possessing passports belonging to other people, under Section 12(1)(f) of the Passport Act 1966, which carries a maximum sentence of RM10,000 fine or five years’ jail or both, upon conviction;
* Misusing a visitor’s pass, under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 which carries a fine of RM1,000 fine or six months’ jail upon conviction; and
* Forging or amending a document, under Section 56(1A)(a) of the immigration Act 1959/1963, which carries a fine of not less than RM30,000 and a jail sentence of up to 10 years, and up to six strokes, upon conviction.
Mohiuddin committed the offences at a rented house in Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Johor Baru, between 4pm and 5pm on Aug 27.
Immigration Department assistant deputy director Norzuriana Muhammad Nor appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.
Earlier, the accused asked for the court to sentence him to jail because he did not have money to pay a fine and claimed that he was a victim of circumstance.
