KUALA LUMPUR: Action against those who fail to return 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) money will not be limited only to Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said while AMLATFPUAA was the basis of the issuance of compound notices demanding the return of 1MDB funds, MACC would not confine its scope concerning the cases.
“We have opened investigation papers on those who have been issued with the compounds,” she said.
In October last year, it was reported that notices were issued to 80 individuals and entities for allegedly receiving funds from 1MDB to pay fines based on the amount that they received, or 2.5 times of that amount.
“If they do not pay and we find out that they are the end-users of that money without any good explanation, we will take action against them,” she said.
Latheefa was met at a press conference to introduce MACC's efforts to raise public awareness on corruption prevention by staging a theatre show titled ‘Semarak Pertiwiku’ on Jan 30 and Jan 31 at Istana Budaya.
The theatre show is brought to Istana Budaya in collaboration between MACC, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.
It is directed by Azri Ali and will feature artists like Ungku Ismail Aziz, Sherie Merlis, Taufiq Hanafi and Chopie Cakap, among others. The show is free for the public and there are 2,000 tickets available.

Meanwhile, on a separate matter, Latheefa said she could not divulge further on the cold case files that were being looked into by MACC but she said there were more than 10 cases.
On another matter, she said that the alleged assault by an officer of the MACC on three policemen was also being investigated by the police.
