IPOH: A newborn baby who was thrown out from the top floor window of a double-storey house in Taman Seri Dermawan, Bercham by her teen mother yesterday, is in critical condition.
District police chief assistant commissioner A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said the baby boy is currently receiving treatment at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) and requires respiratory assistance.
A. Asmadi said initial investigations suggest that the mother of the 16-year-old girl had no idea her daughter was pregnant.
"During the incident, the teen's mother had gone out to the market. When she got home, she found a large number of people, including the police, gathering at her house.
"It was only then that she learnt what had happened," he said.
A. Asmadi said the family had just moved to Ipoh from Rawang, Selangor about a month ago.
The teenager, he said, even managed to conceal her pregnancy from her 14-year-old sister.
He said the incident came to light when a neighbour heard a loud bang on his roof. Upon peeking out, he saw a baby on the roof awning.
He said the teen initially denied that the baby was hers. However, upon further questioning, she finally admitted to being the mother.
"We believe the baby was born in the toilet and the girl cut her baby's umbilical cord herself," he said.
Investigations at the scene in Taman Seri Dermawan, Bercham here showed that there were traces of blood on the bed sheet and the window grille.
Police said the girl's boyfriend lives in Rawang. The girl is currently hospitalised due to bleeding.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for intentionally abandoning a child below the age of 12.
