River pollution suspects employed by Kelantan transport company [NSTTV]

KOTA BARU: The two men detained on suspicion of being involved in the pollution of two rivers in Negri Sembilan and Selangor were working with a transport company in Kelantan.

State police chief, Deputy Superintendent Shafien Mamat said the two, aged 30 and 40, were detained at their homes in Bukit Marak at about noon on Tuesday.

"Their arrests were made by a police CID team from Negri Sembilan assisted by our officers.

"Also seized was a lorry with a Kelantan registration number and checks showed that the vehicle was registered in Kota Baru," he told reporters here today.

Shafien said the two and the lorry were handed over to the Negri Sembilan police for further investigations.

It is learnt that the two have been working with the local transport company for some time and the lorry might have been rented by someone to carry out the activity.

The case is being investigated under Section 430 of Penal Code for mischief by causing a diminution in the supply of water for agricultural purposes, or for food or drink for human beings or animals.

The two, both locals, were picked up on Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in the pollution of Sungai Batang Benar and Sungai Semenyih recently.

The Environment and Water Ministry said waste and organic compounds in the bushes on the fringe of the Nilai Industrial Park were the source of pollution in the river.
