PASIR MAS: Police detained a lorry driver and his Thai wife in possession of heroin base and pills worth more than RM2 million on Monday.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said police also seized a car and motorcycle during the operation at Jalan Pasir Mas-Tanah Merah.
He added the 27-year-old lorry driver was detained at Jalan Pasir Mas-Tanah Merah at about 1.20pm on Monday.
"A Bukit Aman team with the help of the state narcotics team detained the suspect when he passed Jalan Pasir Mas-Tanah Merah.
"The suspect then brought the police to a house nearby where they found 13.295kg of heroin base and 86,000 pills.
"A 23-year-old Thai citizen who was in the house, was also arrested," he told a press conference at the Pasir Mas police station here today.
Also present were Kelantan narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Sheik Azhar Sheik Omar and Pasir Mas police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir.
Shafien said initial investigations showed that the lorry driver had one previous crime record, and his wife had links to an international drug smuggling syndicate which was busted recently.
"Our investigations also revealed that the heroin base and pills were smuggled in from a neighbouring country to be distributed to a state in the south.
"Checks on the female suspect also showed that her border pass had expired," he added.
Shafien said police believe the pills could be used by more than 43,000 drug addicts while the heroin base could supply up to 810,000 people.
He added the duo have been remanded for seven days beginning Monday to assist police investigations into the case.
