Housewife cries upon being charged with child neglect [NSTTV]

JOHOR BARU: A 31-year-old housewife wept when she was charged at the Sessions Court here today with neglecting a female toddler under her care last month.

Nor Huzaimah Herman pleaded not guilty to the charge of neglecting the 3-year-old girl, which resulted in physical injuries to the toddler.

The accused, who was the toddler's babysitter, was charged with committing the offence at the Pelangi Indah People's Housing Project at 11.30am on March 21.

The girl died on March 28.

Nur Huzaimah was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries the maximum RM50,000 fine or 20 years' jail, or both, upon conviction.

Her lawyer, R. Sangaran, pleaded for the court to impose bail on his client on the grounds that Nur Huzaimah had to look after her four schoolgoing children.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Syafiqah Sha'ari said the offence was classified as non-bailable.

She suggested a high bail of RM15,000 if the court decided to grant bail to Nur Hazimah.

Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail fixed bail at RM5,000 with one surety and ordered Nor Huzaimah to report to the Pelangi Indah police station once a month throughout the duration of the case.

Kamal set July 3 for mention pending the submission of post-mortem and chemist reports.

The toddler sustained injuries after she was pinned down by a bicycle on March 21. She died on March 28.
