Prisoner who escaped from Penang hospital recaptured

NIBONG TEBAL: A prison inmate, who escaped from the Sungai Bakap Hospital here yesterday while undergoing treatment, was rearrested today.

Seberang Prai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Ng Ah Thiam said the man was caught at Jalan Pantai in Butterworth about 8.45am today.

"A team from the district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department and the Prisons Department managed to recapture the prison inmate following a tip-off.

"We want to thank the public for the tip-off," he said today.

It was reported yesterday that a prison warden had lodged a police report when the prison inmate ran away from the hospital.

The man was wearing a grey T-shirt and black shorts when he escaped from the tuberculosis quarantine wad, after which a police operation codenamed Op Tutup was launched to track him down.

The latest incident came less than a week after a detainee escaped from the lock-up at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

The incident happened when police were taking the detainee to court. He was rearrested several hours later.
