KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor police have opened an investigation over the spread of a picture of Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil allegedly delivering a political speech in a mosque in Rawang.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the investigation paper was opened in accordance with Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"We have obtained a recording of the speech and we will look into it for further investigation. We will give feedback and updates regarding the case in the near future," he told reporters after the Sime Darby Property Bhd auxiliary police anniversary parade at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang.
On Sunday, a picture of Fahmi delivering a speech in a mosque went viral, with the caption claiming he was delivering a political speech.
However, Fahmi later clarified that he was merely answering the kariah's question about British pop rock band The 1975, which was at the centre of a controversy that eventually saw the Good Vibes Festival 2023 cancelled.
He also clarified that he had only stopped at the mosque to perform Zohor prayers because it was the closest mosque to the location of his next programme.
The viral photo later prompted an investigation by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) following a complaint that was lodged regarding Fahmi's speech.
Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad had said the department had summoned the nazir of the mosque to obtain evidence to assist the investigation in accordance with Section 12 of the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Selangor) 1995 over suspicion of insulting religious authorities.
"Further action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
"Jais would like to remind all candidates and parties contesting (in the state elections) to be careful when in and around mosques and suraus to avoid any behaviour that may lead to violating the order of the Sultan of Selangor and the rulings of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council," he said.
