Motorcyclist who crashed into RTD officer at roadblock fined RM5,000 [NSTTV]

PORT DICKSON: The motorcyclist who went viral after crashing into a Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement officer during a roadblock last Sunday was fined RM5,000 by the magistrate's court here today.

Nor Khairul Azwa Azizi, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges before magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani.

He committed the offences at Km28 Seremban-Port Dickson Highway at about 11am on Sept 17.

Uthman ordered a three-month prison sentence if the accused failed to pay the fine.

Based on the facts, the accused deliberately impeded the responsibilities of a Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement officer, Mohd Nurhakim Mohd Razif, 29, in carrying out his duties during the team's operation.

The accused faced charges under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which, if proven guilty, could result in a maximum prison sentence of two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or a combination of both penalties.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nadia Izzaty Mohd Zainal applied for an appropriate punishment to be given which would serve as a deterrent to the public from obstructing the duties of public servants.

She added that the court should take into consideration the injuries suffered by the RTD officer.

However, Khairul, who was not represented, appealed for a minimum fine, citing the need to support a child and a pregnant wife, and he had lost his job as a security guard.

In a statement, RTD mentioned that the incident resulted in the JPJ officer sustaining injuries to the neck muscles, head, and swelling in the arms and legs.

However, the officer was allowed to return home after receiving treatment at the Port Dickson Hospital.

The media previously reported a viral video depicting a RTD enforcement officer being thrown off balance after being struck by a suspect believed to be attempting to flee from a roadblock.
