PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has briefly discussed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's application for a royal pardon during a meeting today.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the matter, however, was under the jurisdiction of the Pardons Board.
"We discussed briefly (about the matter) but were made to understand that the board will make an announcement about it," he said during a special press conference today.
Saifuddin, however, kept mum when asked about when the announcement would be made.
He reiterated that the matter was not under the Cabinet's jurisdiction and that any matter pertaining to Najib's pardon was under the board itself.
"It is stated clearly under the Federal Constitution regarding the role of the board.
"Yes, we discussed this but we understand that this is under the board's jurisdiction. So I won't answer on behalf of anyone."
The Pardons Board is expected to issue a statement in the nearest time on the jailed former prime minister's application for a royal pardon.
In announcing the matter yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa, did not furnish further details on the matter.
Earlier news reports suggested that the meeting, which was supposed to be held on Monday, was to be the last official meeting for the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah before his reign ended yesterday.
