MELAKA: A shop assistant pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court here to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, which resulted in the deaths of two women last year.
Yong Sang Kein, 37, made the plea after the charges were read to him by an interpreter before Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni.
Yong is accused of driving a car on Jalan Pulau Gadong in the Melaka Tengah district on July 17 this year around 8.30am while under the influence of alcohol and being involved in an accident with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of Iman Nur Azrin Noriman, 18, and Nurul Rahimah Abdull Samad, 32.
The charge is framed under Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act (Amendment) 2020, which carries a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than 15 years in jail, a fine between RM50,000 and RM100,000, and a 10-year disqualification from holding a driving licence upon conviction.
The court allowed the accused a bail of RM5,000 in one surety and ordered the accused's Class D licence to be suspended until the disposal of the case and set Aug 19 for remention and submission of documents.
