MMEA seize cargo ship without insurance documents

KLANG: A cargo ship has been been seized by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for not having valid insurance documents.

Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the ship was stopped some 1.1 nautical miles northwest of Sungai Puloh, Kapar, about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

"Initial checks revealed the ship's captain was a 41-year-old with four crew aged 28 to 50. They are all Indonesian.

"They all had valid identification documents," he said in a statement.

Muhaimin said, upon request for the ship's documents, the captain could not produce valid insurance certificates.

"Following that, the captain and crew were detained and brought to the Pulau Indah marine police jetty for further action.

"The case is being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance for not producing valid insurance certificates," he said.
