Nov 27 set for verdict on ex-magistrate's appeal against 12-year jail, RM1.05m fine for corruption

KUANTAN: The High Court here has set Nov 27 to deliver its decision on the appeal of a former magistrate against the 12-year jail term and a fine of RM1.05 million for soliciting and accepting bribes from a trader in 2019.

The date was fixed after High Court judge Datuk Mohd Radzi Harun heard all submissions from the prosecution and defence regarding the appeal today.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin appeared for prosecution while the accused Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid was represented by R.S.N. Rayer.

On March 18, 2022, Sessions Court judge Datuk Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain found Amin Shahul guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in prison and a fine of RM1.05 million, in default 72 months' jail.

Amin Shahul, formerly a magistrate at the Lipis dan Raub court, was granted a stay of execution pending an appeal filed against his conviction and sentence.

In 2019, Amin Shahul was charged at the Sessions Court here with soliciting bribes amounting to RM100,000 and receiving RM110,000 in 2019.

The bribes were allegedly an inducement for the accused not to fine and jail a trader, who was then facing a charge of possession of smuggled cigarettes.

On Aug 9, 2021, Ahmad Zamzani ordered Amin Shahul to enter his defence on six charges of bribery.
