KUALA TERENGGANU: A senior Fire and Rescue Department officer was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment and fined RM172,000 by the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court today for abusing his power in soliciting bribes by recommending family-owned supply companies.
Judge Dazuki Ali meted out the sentence after the accused, Mohd Roslan Zakaria, 41, was found guilty on three charges under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and punishable under Section 24(1) of the Act.
Roslan was accused of using his position as a senior assistant fire superintendent to obtain bribes by recommending a quotation from his mother-in-law's company, Pak Su Global Enterprise, to supply 60 units of antennas and 30 units of charger spare parts worth RM8,100.
The accused was also charged with committing the same offence by recommending a quotation from Muazzam Global Enterprise, owned by his brother-in-law, to supply 31 units of compasses worth RM7,440.
He was also accused of recommending a quotation from Muazzam Global Enterprise, owned by his brother-in-law, to supply ten units of life jackets and 20 units of wetsuits worth RM17,000.
He was accused of committing the offence at the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Academy Eastern Region in Marang in July and November, 2016.
The court sentenced the accused to two years' jail and fined RM42,000 for the first charge, in default six-month imprisonment.
For the second offence, the accused was sentenced to a RM4,000 fine, in default six months' jail.
The accused was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment and RM90,000 fine, in default 12 months' jail for the third offence.
The court ordered that the jail sentences to run concurrently from today's conviction date.
MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Yasmin Salleh and MACC Prosecuting Officer Nur Raihan Mohd Yusof handled the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer G. Ravishankar.
