[Updated] Immigration D-G: Officers in foreigner smuggling probe face termination

KUALA LUMPUR:The Immigration Department pledged full cooperation with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in its probe into immigration officers allegedly involved in the foreigner smuggling case.

Its director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the department welcomes the MACC's action and fully entrusts the commission to conduct further investigations.

"The Immigration Department would like to stress that it will neither compromise nor protect any officer involved in violations affecting its integrity such as abuse of power and corruption , whether they are done at the country's entry points or any immigration office nationwide, as such things would lead to the department's good name and image being jeapordised.

"Severe action and penalty will be taken based on the existing law, including termination if these officers are proven guilty of committing the offence.

"The Immigration Department is serious and committed in maintaining the high level of integrity of its officers," he said in a statement.

He also encouraged the public to report any misconduct by immigration officers, such as fraud, abuse of power, disciplinary offences, and corruption, through the hotline at 03-8880 1246, via email at aduanintegriti@imi.gov.my, or by visiting the Integrity Division on Level 4, Headquarters of the Malaysian Immigration Department, Putrajaya.

Yesterday, the graftbusters dismantled a syndicate involved in smuggling foreign nationals into the country through entry points believed to bypass official inspections.

Following the operation, 11 people were remanded -including four enforcement officers along with four company owners and two civilians, who are believed to be representatives of the syndicate.

This syndicate involved the collusion of enforcement officers at the country's entry points who were stationed at specific counters to facilitate the entry of foreign nationals.

Through this special counter, these foreign nationals were granted passage without the necessary inspections.
