JOHOR BARU: Four men were charged today in the magistrate's court for allegedly trafficking 59.5kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as Ecstasy, last week.
The accused — Chu Chien Yaeh, 36; Lo Shaw Jie, 26; S. Jiveen, 39; and, Pui Wei Hao, 31 — nodded when the charges were read to them in Mandarin and Malay by the court interpreter before magistrate R. Salini.
No pleas were recorded.
According to the charge sheet, the four men are accused of jointly trafficking MDMA at Pangsapuri Residensi Puncak, Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir, Taman Abad, here, at 12.30am on Aug 12.
The charge is framed under Section 39B (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act, which was read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
If found guilty, the accused face either the death penalty or life imprisonment.
If sentenced to life imprisonment, they would also receive at least 15 strokes of the cane each.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Ameerah Allaudeen prosecuted the case, while none of the accused were represented by legal counsel.
The court set Nov 20 for the next mention, pending the completion of a chemical analysis report.
