PONTIAN: A 56-year-old businesswoman lost almost RM220,000 to a fake online investment scheme offered on Facebook that promised quick and handsome profits.
She had invested in a scheme known as AFA Investment Malaysia, which she came across on the FB page Advance Fin Advisory on Aug 31.
District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the victim was promised high returns of up to RM20,980 within 30 minutes with an initial investment of RM360.
Enticed by the quick profits, she made several online bank transfers amounting to RM219,843.75 from Sep 2 onwards to a mule bank account.
The victim only realised she had been duped when none of the promised returns were paid and she was unable to recover her funds.
She lodged a police report yesterday and the case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal code for cheating.
