KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police are working to identify accomplices linked to the Malaysian man arrested in Hong Kong with RM116.1 million worth of methamphetamines.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said he had instructed the Federal Narcotic Crime Investigation Department director to collaborate with Hong Kong authorities.
"I have asked him to liaise with them to gather intelligence on the suspect's accomplices in Malaysia," he said when contacted today (Sept 15).
Razarudin said that the 26-year-old suspect was from Sungai Besi and has a prior record for drug possession and consumption under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
"We will learn more once we receive additional information from the authorities in Hong Kong," he added.
Hong Kong police recently made their largest-ever seizure of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'Ice', valued at HKD210 million (RM116.1 million). The drugs were concealed in furniture, and the Malaysian suspect was arrested on suspicion of trafficking.
Acting Superintendent Cheung Hok-fung from the Hong Kong narcotics bureau disclosed that 335kg of crystal meth and 55kg of cocaine were discovered hidden in 25 out of 245 boxes within a shipping container that had arrived from the United States.
The syndicate used a logistics company to transport the goods to a warehouse in Yuen Long.
The suspect, who had reportedly entered Hong Kong as a tourist a year ago, was found unpacking the shipment, equipped with gloves and electronic scales, when police raided the premises.
He is believed to have been planning the trafficking operation for over a year.
