KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrived at the High Court today in connection with his corruption trial for misappropriating 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) funds.
The 71-year-old, who was hospitalised, arrived at the court in a wheelchair around 9 am. He looked frail but waved to the media at the court entrance.
The trial, which had been delayed following Najib's admission to Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Sept 9 for severe knee inflammation and sleep apnea, resumed today.
On Sept 10, during the case hearing before judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, HKL Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department senior consultant Dr Siti Hawa Tahir informed the court of Najib's condition. Consequently, the trial proceedings were vacated for two days.
However, on Sept 12, the court was told that Najib was still hospitalised, prompting a further postponement of the trial until today.
Dr Siti Hawa said the medical team needed to monitor Najib's progress after prescribing him opioids on Sept 10.
Najib is facing four charges of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.
For the 21 money laundering charges, the former Pekan member of parliament is accused of committing the offences between March 22, 2013, and Aug 30, 2013.
