KOTA BARU: Police have arrested 60 foreigners for breaching traffic regulations in a series of operations statewide since early this year.
Acting Kelantan police chief Deputy Commissioner Mohd Ali Tamby said they were detained for various offences such driving without licences and driving with expired roadtaxes.
He added the foreigners were from various countries, but primarily came from Thailand and Myanmar.
"During our traffic operations since early this year, we have nabbed 60 foreigners for violating road regulations.
"They were arrested in several locations in the state, mostly in Kota Baru. During the same period last year, we detained 167 foreigners for breaching the road transport act."
He was speaking at a press conference after attending the state police's monthly gathering here, today.
Up to today, Ali said 537 foreigners were inspected during statewide traffic operations.
On another note, he said 34 foreigners were detained by the state police for entering the country illegally and being involved in drug abuse, as well as other crimes.
He said they comprised 26 Indonesians, seven Thai nationals and one Myanmar national.
Asked on the state police's preparedness in facing the coming rainy season, he said more than 1,000 officers have been on standby mode for any eventuality of flooding in Kelantan.
"All our assets are ready to be deployed to flood-prone areas once floods hit Kelantan.
"The Meteorological Department has issued statement that the monsoon season is expected to begin in November and end March, next year."
