Teenager jailed 11 months for providing false information to replace MyKad

KOTA KINABALU: A 19-year-old girl has been jailed 11 months for providing false information when applying to replace her MyKad.

The accused, identified only as Sarah, who lacked identification documents, pleaded guilty under Regulation 25(1)(b) of the Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) at the magistrate's court here today.

Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali ordered the sentence to commence from the date of her arrest on Sept 20, and she will be referred to the Immigration Department upon completing her sentence.

The case facts revealed that Sarah arrived at the National Registration Department's (NRD) Sabah Identity Card Section at 10.30am on Sept 20 to apply for a replacement MyKad under the name Noralisah Asliah.

She provided a birth certificate and police report for a lost card.

However, her fingerprints did not match the records in the NRD database, and the ID number she sought was issued to another citizen.

Upon interrogation, Sarah revealed her real name and said her birthplace was in Pulau Gaya near here, and admitted that the birth certificate was not hers. She was then arrested by the authorities.

She faced a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both upon conviction.

The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Faizal Tahir and the accused was unrepresented.
