KLUANG: A couple in their 20s has been arrested for allegedly abusing their three-year-old son after a doctor attending to the child reported the suspected abuse to the police.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the report was lodged by a doctor from Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital last night.
"The attending doctor contacted the police, expressing concern about their young patient, who had been admitted with injuries suspected to be the result of abuse.
"Medical examinations revealed multiple injuries on the child's body, raising concerns of foul play," he said in a statement today.
The incident first gained public attention when Facebook user Joan Ng posted a picture of the boy, showing visible bruises and his arm in a sling, claiming that his parents had allegedly abused him.
Ng called for public assistance in locating the boy's parents.
Following the report, a man and a woman were arrested at the hospital at 1.50am today.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for physically injuring a child. If convicted, the suspects could face up to 20 years in prison, a fine, or both.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days pending further investigation.
Bahrin also urged anyone with information regarding the alleged abuse to contact the district police headquarters at 07-7784222 or the hotline at 07-7766822.
