PENDANG: "I heard a faint sound that resembled a kitten, which is why I asked my husband to open the box on the table in front of our stall.
"It was drizzling at the time, and we were the only ones open. When we opened the box, we saw a baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached, crying—probably from hunger—and it seemed he had just been born because there was blood on him."
Che Som Saad, 75, and her husband Mahmud Lebai Salleh, 77, found the baby wrapped in cloth inside the box on the table at around 6.45am yesterday.
"I didn't know what to say when we found him. My husband immediately cried when he saw the baby covered in blood and still attached to the umbilical cord," she said.
The couple had just started selling their cakes at the stall a week ago, having previously delivered their cakes to other vendors.
Meanwhile, Mahmud believes the baby was placed there before dawn.
"I wanted to call someone for help, but my phone had no credit... so I had to stop a passing motorcyclist to tell them what happened.
"My friend informed the health clinic in Kampung Rambai before a nurse arrived to check on the baby," he said.
He also filed a police report regarding the incident, and the baby was taken to the Pendang Hospital for examination.
Kedah Social Welfare Department director Datuk Zulkhairi Zainol Abidin said an investigation is underway.
Pendang police chief Deputy Superintendent Roslan Mat said police were informed of the abandoned baby at 8.08am yesterday and they are looking for the individual who abandoned the boy.
