KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 97 investigation papers have been opened since the police launched Op Global last month.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said that 12 of these papers had led to prosecutions involving nine individuals.
These individuals face a total of 34 charges, including 20 under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, nine under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act, three under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, one under Section 354 of the Penal Code, and one under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
Shuhaily said that investigations into Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB) had consumed nearly all resources within the Federal CID.
"Our top priority is to complete the investigations into the company.
"It has been nearly a month since we began our large-scale investigations, and we expect the investigation team to downsize as the probe progresses. We have other cases that also require attention, and I will discuss with my officers ways to expedite the investigations," he said.
GISB has been under scrutiny following police raids on Sept 11 at 20 welfare homes allegedly operated by the organisation, which led to the rescue of 402 individuals, the majority of whom are children.
Subsequent screenings revealed that many of the children had suffered physical and emotional abuse, with 13 reportedly victims of sexual assault, including sodomy.
GISB has denied all allegations of child exploitation and abuse.
