SHAH ALAM: A car broker was charged at the Sessions Court here today with ten counts of money laundering involving RM1.35 million related to the purchase of three luxury vehicles in 2017.
Amier Amzar Akbarudin, 34, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before Judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir.
He was accused of transferring and disposing of RM1.24 million in cash and a total of RM110,000 in checks, proceeds from illegal activities, into his two bank accounts and the accounts of seven men aged between 32 and 67.
The offences were allegedly committed at a bank in Subang Jaya between Feb 4 and April 6, 2017.He was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
If found guilty, he could face a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the proceeds from the illegal activity, or RM5 million, whichever is higher.Amier Amzar also pleaded not guilty to deceiving a 44-year-old man into purchasing three imported vehicles—a Porsche 911, Lamborghini Aventador, and Audi R8—and leading the man to make a payment totaling RM1.45 million.He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' jail, whipping and a fine. Muhamad Anas then set bail at RM200,000 for all money laundering charges and RM25,000 for the luxury vehicle purchase fraud, while allowing the additional conditions proposed by the prosecution.The court set Jan 14 for mention.
