Labourer jailed after failing to pay fine for knife possession

BATU PAHAT: A 32-year-old labourer, Sallehuddin Mohamad Rom, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for failing to pay a RM10,000 fine imposed by the Sessions Court for possessing two knives.

He also faced a charge for heroin possession.

Sallehuddin pleaded guilty to all three charges: two for possessing knives and one for allegedly having heroin. The charges were read to him by an interpreter in front of Judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh.

According to the first and second charges, Sallehuddin was accused of possessing two dangerous weapons: a "Crownman" folding knife and a 25-centimetre-long sheathed knife.

These offenses occurred on Jalan Tiong 4, Parit Sulong, at 12.10am on November 22, after police found him acting suspiciously. Upon searching him, officers discovered the knives in his shoulder bag.

For the first two charges, he was charged under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and whipping.

For the third charge, Sallehuddin was accused of possessing 10.43g of heroin and charged under Section 12(2) and Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The court imposed a RM5,000 fine for each of the first two charges, with an additional 20-month prison term if the fine was not paid. However, the prison sentences will run concurrently.
