[UPDATED] RM7.6mil lost daily to commercial crimes this year, says police

KUALA LUMPUR: KUALA LUMPUR: An average of 86 commercial crime cases per day, resulting in losses of RM7.6 million, were reported this year.

Between January and Nov 24, total losses amounted to over RM2.5 billion.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department Director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said these losses were linked to 28,377 cases that occurred from Jan to November 24.

"These reports involve losses amounting to RM2,503,218,841.

"Based on our analysis of the data, an average of 86 cases, involving RM7,608,567 have occurred daily this year," he said when contacted.

He said in comparison to the same period last year, they have noted a five per cent drop in cases.

"During the same period last year, we recorded 29,829 commercial crime cases.

"The losses incurred by victims however tell a different story, as we have seen a 37 per cent increase this year compared to the RM 1,829,615,444 lost in 2023," he said.

Ramli said in terms of prosecutions, 12,805 investigation papers were charged in court which amounts to 45 per cent of the cases reported so far this year.

"This shows an increase in prosecutions compared to the 42 per cent (12,565 investigation papers) recorded during the same period in 2023.

"We hope that the public plays an active role in ensuring that information on commercial crime cases and the latest modus operandi is shared within the community.

"An informed society is tougher to scam," he said.
