Appellate Court to hear Syed Saddiq's appeal on March 19 [WATCH]

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has fixed March 19 next year to hear Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's appeal against his sentence and conviction of corruption.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the court has fixed two days (March 19 and 20) to hear the appeal during the management of the case today.

"The court also set March 4 as the final deadline for both parties to submit their respective written submissions," he said.

The Muar member of parliament was sentenced to seven years in jail and two strokes of the cane for charges of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property and two counts of money laundering.

The court sentenced the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance former president to three years in jail and one stroke of the cane for abetting CBT involving RM1 million of the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Armada wing's funds.

The accused is also facing two years imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for misusing property for himself, namely RM120,000 from the Maybank Islamic Bhd account belonging to Armanda Bumi Bersatu Enterprise.

Syed Saddiq was sentenced to two years in jail and fined RM5 million in default two years jail for each money laundering charge. The court ordered the sentence to run concurrently.

However, the court granted his application for a stay of execution pending an appeal, allowing him to delay the sentence.
