'Weednesday', 'Green Tea': Codenames used to sell drugs online

KUALA LUMPUR: Green, Smoke, Weednesday, and Green Tea.

These are among the code names drug syndicates use to sell their new Psychoactive Substances (NPS) online, including on social media, e-commerce platforms, and the dark web.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said interested buyers would send direct messages to sellers for transaction details.

The drugs would then be delivered to buyers using courier services.

Razarudin said syndicates manipulating online platforms are believed to target youths, including students.

Complicating matters for the authorities is that the syndicates often change the code names once social media and e-commerce platforms detect their use for the drug trade.

Razarudin said the ease with which people can purchase drugs online and have them delivered is worrying.

"This modus operandi is easy and quick for both buyers and sellers. The sale of drugs online is increasingly popular.

"When both parties get what they want, they are encouraged to further embrace dark personality traits."

Meanwhile, Razarudin said drug syndicates operating in the "Golden Triangle" increasingly use Malaysia as a transit point for drugs because of the country's strategic location.

The "Golden Triangle" refers to the mountainous area along the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, where conditions are ideal for opium cultivation.

The drugs brought into the country are then shipped to Indonesia, Australia, and Singapore.

He said that in 2023, some 11.2 tonnes of methamphetamine were seized in the country.

"This was the first time methamphetamine seizures exceeded 10 tonnes."
