KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak police have arrested two men in Bintulu and Miri for allegedly accessing websites and possessing child pornography videos.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said information on the two separate cases were received in April and November this year.
"Police found that the two men had accessed websites (related to child pornography) and had stored child pornography videos on their mobile phones," he said in a statement.
He said the cases were being investigated under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
Mancha advised the public not to access pornographic websites nor keep any child pornography videos as this was an offence which could lead to them being jailed up to five years or fined up to RM10,000, or both.
"The public is urged to provide information to police should they come across such cases," he said.
The news comes even as the New Straits Times has been running a series of reports on the pervasiveness of child pornography in the country.
Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is now horrifyingly easy to access in Malaysia, with videos being sold on social media platforms for merely RM1.
The growing demand for such content is dangerously fuelling the production of locally made child pornography, raising grave concern about children's safety.
Parents deeply concerned about the rampant spread of child pornographic material on social media are demanding urgent action from the authorities to protect children from paedophiles.
One father who was somehow included in an online chat group has spoken about how he was left shocked and traumatised by the brutal, disgusting content to which he was soon exposed.
