KUALA LUMPUR: Police have dismantled an imitation firearms syndicate here, seizing over 600 imitation firearms.
Also seized during the raids were prohibited medicines and two white-rumped shama birds.
The seizures were worth over RM436,000.
Federal Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) gathered intelligence and began operations on Dec 17 and Dec 18.
"We received information on the sale of these imitation weapons being sold online and conducted two operations at Kota Baru, Kelantan and Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.
"The first raid on Dec 17 at Kota Baru involved the sale of these imitation weapons and keeping of wildlife without permits," he said in a statememt today.
He said they arrested a man and seized 32 imitation weapons.
"Our investigations revealed the suspect was selling these weapons via an online platform for several months.
"Further checks led to the seizure of two white-rumped shama birds which were being kept without valid permits under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said, adding that they also seized several boxes containing medicines that were not certified by the Health Ministry.
He said the second operation was conducted on Dec 18 where they tracked down and arrested two more foreign men at Jalan Raja Laut.
"We seized 637 more imitation weapons during that raid," he said adding that the seizures were worth RM436,971.
He said the case was being investigated under the Weapons Act 1960 and Rule 1(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
Azmi said they would increase their intelligence efforts to curb such activities more effectively for the sake of internal security and public order.
He also called on the public to channel any information on such activities to the police.
