KOTA KINABALU: Police have obtained a one-day long remand order against activist and graphic designer Fahmi Reza, who is being investigated under the Sedition Act.
The remand order was issued when Fahmi, whose real name Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin, was produced at the magistrate's court here this morning.
Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali granted the police's application to remand Fahmi, 47, beginning today until Jan 1.
Wan Farrah made the decision after considering the grounds for remand submitted to the court and hearing submissions from lawyers representing Fahmi.
Earlier, an investigating officer applied for a four-day remand against the Fahmi to facilitate the investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Lawyers Nurul Rafeeqa Abdul Mutolip and Sherzali Herza Asli, who represented Fahmi, objected to the four-day remand application on the grounds that the investigation could be completed within 24 hours.
It was reported that police confirmed that Fahmi is being investigated under the Sedition Act. (hyperlink: https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2024/12/1154742/sabah-police-co...)
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said Fahmi was arrested after giving evidence at the Penampang police headquarters near here yesterday afternoon.
Jauteh had previously said that more than 30 police reports had been lodged in Sabah against the activist for sedition.
Jauteh said police had received reports that Fahmi, among others, had pasted caricatures involving the image of Tun Musa Aman, who will be appointed as the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, in several areas, including in Kota Kinabalu, and other matters involving sedition that were being investigated.
A few days ago, a 40-second video went viral showing Fahmi in an area in Kota Kinabalu pasting the caricature and in the video was written the words "Solidarity with the people of Sabah who fight corruption, fight bribery."
