Kelantan police report 90pct drop in cross-border crime since ban enforced

KOTA BARU: Cross-border criminal activities have been brought under control since the enforcement of the ban on illegal crossings on Dec 1 last year.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said more than 90 per cent of cross-border activities have decreased since the ban was imposed.

"According to our records, illegal activities along the border have dropped by more than 90 per cent since the ban came into effect on Dec 1.

"The illegal activities that have decreased include drug smuggling, such as Yaba pills and syabu.

"We have also received positive feedback from locals regarding the ban," he told reporters after the state police's monthly gathering today.

Since the ban on illegal crossings began on Dec 1, Mohd Yusoff said seven individuals have been charged in court for entering Malaysia via illegal routes.

He added that all were charged under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

He also noted that Yaba pills remain the most popular drug among Kelantan addicts.

"As of the end of last year, the police seized more than one tonne of Yaba pills.

"Besides Yaba, syabu is the second most sought-after drug by thousands of addicts in Kelantan," he added.
