PORT DICKSON: A scam syndicate has been found using the Port Dickson district police headquarters hotline to deceive victims regarding traffic offences and to extort money.
District police chief Superintendent Maslan Udin said the hotline, typically reserved for official use, was not used to contact the public about legal violations.
"We would like to inform the public that the Port Dickson IPD hotline (0176001411) is being misused by irresponsible individuals for fraudulent purposes," he said in a statement today.
The scammer's modus operandi involves fake calls made from the hotline, claiming to be related to traffic violations or other issues to trick victims.
Maslan emphasised that the police would never use the hotline to request personal financial details or involve any financial transactions.
"The hotline is strictly for official matters. We advise the public not to disclose any personal or financial information to unknown parties," he said.
He also cautioned the public not to fall for scams or threats related to criminal acts, traffic accidents, or fines via phone calls.
"Be cautious of calls that involve threats or psychological pressure, and always verify any information by contacting the police through official numbers," he added, explaining that the case is under investigation.
