LIPIS: A routine police roadblock deployed at Km7 of Jalan Lipis-Benta near here on Monday resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old man with hundreds of protected birds, including jungle fowls destined for the Klang Valley.
Policemen who flagged down the delivery lorry for routine inspection at 9.30pm discovered 494 birds of various sizes confined in more than 200 containers and cages.
Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said policemen had earlier instructed the Mitsubishi lorry driver to stop and open the rear compartment for inspection.
"The lorry travelling from Kota Baru in Kelantan to Shah Alam, Selangor, was transporting animals, which are believed listed as protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010. "The driver could not produce any document or approval from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to transport the birds.
"Investigations revealed the driver had picked the birds and other small mammals at separate locations before he arrived at the roadblock. We are working closely with Perhilitan to conduct further investigations," he said in a statement today.
Ismail said the seized lorry and animals were kept at the district police station, and investigations were conducted under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 for transporting protected species without permit.
