MACC remands two enforcement officers over bribery

ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remanded two enforcement officers here today.

They were suspected of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to about RM6,000 in exchange for not taking action against ketum traders in the state.

A five-day remand order, which will end on Jan 19, was issued by magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali following an application by MACC at the magistrate's court here this morning.

According to sources, the two male suspects, in their 30s, were detained about 2pm yesterday when they gave their statements at the Kedah MACC office here.

"Preliminary investigations found that the suspects allegedly committed the offence in June 2023.

"Both are believed to have accepted bribes totaling about RM6,000 from ketum traders in return for not taking action against their activities," the source said.

Meanwhile, state MACC Director Datuk Ahmad Nizam Ismail, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
