JOHOR BARU: Two people were burnt to death when their car crashed into a Telekom Malaysia utility box at Mile 7 1/2 off Jalan Bakri here early this morning.
A 55-year-old Singaporean man and a 35-year-old Malaysian woman were killed when the Mazda car they were travelling in burst into flame in the 3am incident.
Another woman passenger, in her 30s, was seriously injured in the crash.
Muar police chief Assistant Commissioner Azman Ayob said police are still trying to ascertain the identities of the victims.
"The third person in the vehicle was badly injured and was rushed to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment," he said.
He said police believed the trio came from Singapore based on the car's registration number.
Azman said the victims were heading towards Bakri when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed straight into the roadside utility box.
The impact resulted in a spark that immediately led to a fire.
Firemen from Muar Fire and Rescue Department were at the scene and spent more than an hour to control the fire.
Azman said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
