KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian education system needs to keep up with the latest advancements in technology, Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said today.
He cited the utilisation of cutting-edge teaching methods and tools in schools, such as the Smart Board (functional with internet connection), and allowing the use of digital devices in the classroom.
While Malaysia’s current education policy disallows the use of electronic devices, such as tablets, in the classroom, Mahdzir said the Education Ministry is in the midst of researching ways to integrate digital teaching tools into schools.
"I was in Indonesia recently, and I saw how they have successfully implemented the usage of electronic devices in the classroom.
"We are still at an early discussion stage on determining if we are able to cope with electronic devices in schools.
"But I hope to bring this teaching method into the education system in the near future," he said after launching a series of sports books published by the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM).
Mahdzir added that in order to ensure smooth digital integration, the ministry will begin upgrading internet connectivity in schools nationwide.
"We are looking at improving internet connectivity in areas outside the city.
"As for schools in urban areas, we are ensuring that the 1Bestarinet 4G connectivity meets (the highest) standards.
"These improvements will be done before we decide on implementing any new teaching method that utilises electronic devices," he said.
If the new method can be implemented, it will be practiced in both primary and secondary schools, he added.
