IPOH: More than 1,000 Buddhist devotees filled the Enlightened Heart Buddhist Temple in Tambun near here to celebrate Wesak and pay their respects to the Lord Buddha.
As early as 10am, about five chartered buses made their way to send the tour groups from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Kedah to the temple entrance.
Most of the devotees were seen carrying the Lord Sakyamuni Buddha or Lord Yellow Dzambhala idol on their back to get rid of bad karma.
Some made their ways inside the temples to pray and light the oil lamps.
It is believed that the oil lamp chases away darkness and symbolises lighting up life.
The candles are shaped as lotus flowers as the flowers grow in murky water and signify that despite the messy world, Buddha blooms from it.
The highlight of the event was the sunning of the gigantic thangka to receive special blessings from Lord Sakyamuni Buddha at about 1pm.
The 60m x 12m thangka, a canvas painting of Buddha, was carried by worshippers, unrolled and held head high to enable the devotees to walk under it to receive blessings and good luck from Lord Sakyamuni Buddha for the coming year.
