7, including 5 doctors, to be charged over fake medical certificate scam

GEORGE TOWN: Seven people, including five doctors, will be charged tomorrow in connection with the issuance of fake medical certificates of fitness to drivers renewi¬ng their Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licences.

Six suspects will be charged at George Town Court and Butterworth Court, while the seventh will be charged at Ipoh Court.

"The four to be charged here are two doctors and two middlemen. The two to be charged at Butterworth are also doctors. The one in Ipoh is also a doctor. They will have to turn up at the courts or arrest warrants will be issued.

"There is another person who should be charged tomorrow as well, but the person is now in China receiving treatment for cancer. We are putting it on hold until further notice," State Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commissi¬on (MACC) director Datuk Abdul Aziz Aban said.

On Feb 15, seven doctors, two middl¬emen and a clinic assistant were arrested and remanded for suspected involvement in the issuance of fake medical certificates for drivers over the past 10 years.

The arrests came after MACC officers went undercover in Dec last year and found that the doctors were issuing the certificates without conducting any health checks.

The MACC then launched 'Ops Cergas' and simultaneously raided seven clinics in Bukit Mertajam, Pekan Lama, Prai, Batu Feringghi and Gelugor in mid-Feb this year.
