Citizenship woes for 400 to be resolved soon

JOHOR BARU: The Home Ministry is hoping to resolve citizenship problems faced by over 400 people from the Indian community by the end of this month.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the issue was being addressed under the National Registration Department's MyDaftar programme.

It is one of the areas of focus under the 10-year Malaysian Indian Blueprint which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"The blueprint aims to resolve the applications made by 466 people in the Indian community to resolve citizenship status issues. The applications were made under the MyDaftar citizenship registration scheme," he said.

He was speaking after launching the Johor NRD distribution printing hub at the state NRD headquarters here today.

Nur Jazlan said a total of 23 NRD office nationwide are involved in the MyDaftar campaign which has started receiving applications since June 5 and the exercise is scheduled to end by June 22.

He said the process is stringent as it will require the department to vet the backgrounds of the applicants through the submitted forms and supporting documents required for to the citizenship application before the citizenship status can be awarded.

"The submitted citizenship application will also go through the checking of the Home Ministry before it (ministry) will issue out the citizenship status on qualified applicants," he said.
