KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) gold medalists are set to receive a bumper payout amounting to RM3 million through the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam).
Through Shakam, athletes are rewarded RM20,000 for their first gold at the games followed by RM10,000 for subsequent gold medals.
According the the National Sports Council (NSC) website, team sports with less than five players also receive RM20,000 while those with more than five receive RM5,000 per person for gold.
Malaysian athletes won 145 gold at KL2017, emerging overall champions of the competition.
Athletes which break games records also receive RM1,000. National athletes broke a total of 18 games records at KL2017.
Silver and bronze medal winners, however, do not receive any rewards.
Coaches and sports associations responsible for the athletes will also be rewarded through the Coaching Incentive Scheme (SGAR) and Sports Management Excellence Scheme (SIKAP).
