MELAKA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron today condemned the atrocities against Rohingya in Myanmar's Rakhine state, where deadly violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people including women and children.
Idris, who is also the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) president, described the latest wave of violence faced by thousands of Rohingya Muslims as heartless and inhumane.
"The innocents including children and women have been killed ruthlessly and without sympathy.
"Where is Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi? Why is she keeping mum on this when she is renown for advocating against violence and championing for humanitarian efforts," he said at a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting at Ramada Plaza here.
Myanmar's Northern Rakhine state erupted into fresh violence on Aug 25 when the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) – since declared a terrorist organisation by the Myanmar government - launched deadly attacks on 30 security posts.
In response, the army has carried out bloody reprisal operations which has left hundreds of Rohingya dead and tens of thousands more fleeing for their lives.
Idris, who conveyed his deepest sympathy over the plight of thousands of Rohingya Muslims, called on Myanmar government to stop the violence.
"The world is getting smaller for everyone. Regardless of race and religion, we should all be colour blind and not be cruel to one another," he said.
He added that living in such multicultural society like Malaysia, a harmonious relationship must be preserved.
"We may celebrate different festivals, but every religion teaches us to be tolerant with one another. There should not be cruelty against each other," he said.
