16% to 26% of goods cheaper following GST implementation: KPDNKK

KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) said today that of 1,396 varieties of goods monitored since the goods and services tax (GST) was implemented in April 2015, between 16 and 26 per cent have become cheaper.

In a written Parliamentary reply, KPDNKK said the percentage is based on price data monitored by the Ministry.

KPDNKK was responding to a question from Pas's Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament Ahmad Baihaki Atiqullah on the percentage of items that now cost less after the GST was implemented.

The Ministry also stressed that the price of goods is determined by a range of factors, including exchange rates, supply, wages, the weather and fuel prices – and not just by the GST.
